Sliding Patio Door Locks
Repairs to sliding patio doors are becoming less common nowadays as they become less popular in favour of double french doors and bifold door systems.
Sliding patio doors have two main issues, one being the locking mechanism, often an internally mounted lock that runs inside the aluminium or upvc frame of the sliding door.
As with any door lock, once it's misaligned and the user begins to force the stiff lock, the internal gears can shear or crumble leaving a jammed door mechanism.
This kind of lock problem can be avoided by regular maintenance and adjusting of the door.
The second common issue is worn or jammed rollers on the bottom of the door causing the door to drop and making it very difficult to slide.
This in turn can result in a misaligned door that won't lock properly.
A lot of sliding patio door locks and hardware are now obsolete but good locksmiths and door repair firms can still obtain a lot of the parts from specialist trade suppliers.
Roller Shutter Locks
Locks for roller shutters can br tricky to source as they come in various shapes, sizes and styles and are not readily available from the local DIY stores but are usually stocked by good locksmiths and door repair firms.
The two most common styles of roller shutter lock are bullet locks which are steel locking pins that push into a special housing welded to the frame of the roller shutter and electronic key switch which are usually mounted in a small steel box next to the roller shutter.
Bullet locks come in a range of dimensions depending on the supplier so when ordering replacement bullet locks its always best to show your locksmith a picture beforehand, the two most common styles are oval and round faced bullet locks, but these both have variants that are no interchangeable.
Changing the lock in a roller shutter key switch should be carried out by an experienced locksmith or shutter firm as are wired into the mains electricity. Roller shutter key switch locks are stocked by most reputable locksmiths.
uPVC Door Repairs
These are probably the most common style of door nowadays and use a wide range of locks, hinges and door hardware, some very popular and some hard to source components.
Most uPVC door locking issues stem from one main cause; badly aligned doors whose lock does not mesh correctly.
As soon as the user begins forcing a stiff lock it can lead to broken handles, cracked hinges and eventually a failed door locking mechanism, the latter being the most expensive to repair.
With regular maintenance uPVC doors can last well beyond ten years. Factors that affect the lifespan of a uPVC door range from changes in temperature, how regularly it is used and how well it was initially installed.
Working as a locksmith over the years I have found that darker coloured doors exposed to the sun are most problematic due to the frequent expansion/contraction and in some cases can warp badly or part at the joints.
The majority of lock mechanisms can be sourced easily by specialist lock suppliers and even obsolete lock models can be replaced with universal or locks with similar dimensions.
